a concentration in one of the following fields:
Europe:
18 credits of coursework must be at or above the 300 level in European
history, while 6 credits must be at or above the 300 level in a
field outside the European concentration. The remaining 12 credits
are electives.
United
States: 18 credits of coursework must be at or above the 300
level in United States history, while 6 credits must be at or above
the 300 level in a field outside the U.S. concentration. The remaining
12 credits are electives.

any geographic field(s), with the following restriction: a maximum

(A His 286 and A His 287 may be counted for upper-level credit in
the World History concentration.) The remaining 12 credits are electives.
Any history
course can be used to fulfill the "elective" requirement
-- 100, 200, and 300-level courses in any geographic area are all
potential electives.
To find out
what courses will fulfill each concentration, please see the Undergraduate
Bulletin's listing
of history courses by concentration.
The
Minor
Students minoring in history must complete a minimum of 18 credits
in course work with an AHis prefix. Of these 18 credits, 9 or
more must be in course work at or above the 300 level, and no more
than 12 credits can be from either the United States or the European
history concentration (see "The Major," above, for information
about the geographic concentrations).
A student may, on petition to the Director of Undergraduate Studies
in the history department, count toward the minor one relevant course
of no more than 4 credits taken in a department other than history.
Combined B.A./M.A.
Program
The combined
B.A./M.A. program in history provides an opportunity for students
of recognized academic ability and educational maturity to fulfill
integrated requirements of undergraduate and master’s degree programs
from the beginning of their junior year.
The combined
program requires a minimum of 138 credits, of which at least 30
must be graduate credits. In qualifying for the B.A., students must
meet all University and college requirements, including the requirements
of the major program in history described previously, the minor
requirement, the minimum 90-credit liberal arts and sciences requirement,
General Education, and residency requirements. In qualifying for
the M.A., students must meet all University and college requirements
as outlined in the Graduate Bulletin, including completion of a
minimum of 30 graduate credits and any other conditions, such as
a research seminar, thesis, comprehensive examination, other professional
experience, and residency requirements. Up to 12 graduate credits
may be applied simultaneously to both the B.A. and M.A. programs.
Students are
considered as undergraduates until completion of 120 graduation
credits and satisfactory completion of all B.A. requirements. Upon
meeting B.A. requirements, students are automatically considered
as graduate students. A cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or
higher and three supportive letters of recommendation from faculty,
one of whom must be from the Department of History, are required
for consideration. Students are admitted to the combined program
upon the recommendation of the department’s Graduate Committee.
