She was the daughter of Lucas J. and Catharina Van Deusen Witbeck. She married Reuben Van Vechten in May 1718. Seven months later, the first of her eight children was baptized in the Albany Dutch church. These Van Vechtens lived in Albany's third ward. Her husband died prematurely in 1735 leaving Geertruy to raise her large family with the support of the Witbecks.
