Dr. G. J. Barker-Benfield
Interest Statement
:My teaching and research interests are the histories of women and men (gender) in the larger contexts of American social and political history, and in comparison with the British history. At the moment, my chief chronological focus is the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with some forays before and after, as I try to understand the progress of "sensibility" in relation to the "reformation of manners." One central frame of reference is my The Culture of Sensibility: Sex and Society in Eighteenth Century Britain (1992), and another Donald Meyer, Sex and Power: The Rise of Women in America, Russia, Sweden, and Italy (1987).
