About this course:
This course examines the history of the South from the Revolution through the 1960s. Race and race relations will be a central theme, as the course moves from the expansion of slavery through the Civil War, emancipation, segregation, and the civil rights movement. Readings will be drawn from both secondary and primary sources and will introduce students to the lives of men and women across class, race, and regional lines. Active participation in the discussion of these readings will be expected of all students.

Important note: This is an 8 week 1, or "quarter," course, meaning that an entire semester's material will be covered in half of a semester's time. Each class meeting will represent the equivalent of an entire week in a regular semester, so students should be ready to do much more work to prepare for each class than is usually necessary for a regular, semester-length course.
