My period of interest has always been within the long nineteenth century, from 1789 through 1914, and the cultural responses to the overpowering onset of late modernity. Presently, my work has narrowed to my dissertation, tentatively titled “An Artist in Search of the Wilderness: The Life of Thomas Cole and His Adirondack Journeys,” which received an advance contract from SUNY Press. This work affords an opportunity to consider these broader transatlantic and national issues in cultural and environmental history through the intimate perspective of the leading Romantic painter in the northern antebellum republic.
