Underground Railroad
Many
people know that the Underground Railroad was active in the
northern
states prior to the Civil War, but few of us have traced the route,
learned about the strategies, or viewed the houses and tools that were
part of that "conspiracy for freedom".
Paul and
Mary Liz Stewart will retrace the steps of former slaves
who traveled the Underground Railroad to freedom. Their talk will focus
on the Albany story and the people involved - both the fugitives and
those who assisted them.
This
Albany Heritage lecture is part of the Neighborhood series. It is a
free event.
Paul and
Mary Liz Stewart began researching the Underground Railroad
because
Mary Liz hoped to bring the history of Harriet Tubman and the
Underground Railroad to life for her students by providing some local
flavor.
Their joint interest grew into a research project that focused
on the history of
the Underground Railroad in the Albany
area.
In
addition to "working on the railroad", Paul is employed by a
local
community development organization and has written for local
newspapers.
Mary Liz is an elementary school teacher, who also teaches
theater in a local summer program.
