Roundtable on the Corning Years

The transient and enduring aspects of Erastus Corning II's tenure as Mayor of the city of Albany will be explored in this roundtable, which will feature short presentations by several experts on Erastus Corning, and allow for maximum sharing of insights and remembrances by members of the audience.

Erastus Corning III was the longest-tenured mayor of any city in America, and was noted for the stable leadership that he brought to the city. His name is synonymous with highly-personalized politics, a superb mastery of retail, one-on-one politics, and his long collaboration with Dan O'Connell to build a far-reaching political machine.

Panel members include: Helen R. Desfosses, Paul Grondahl, John J. McEneny, and Ivan D. Steen.

This offering of the Albany Heritage History and Politics series is a free event.

Helen R. Desfosses is President of the Albany Common Council and Associate Dean of the UAlbany Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. She is a regular bi-weekly political commentator on the noon news on WAMC public radio and is co-editor of "Designs for Democratic Stability."

Paul Grondahl is an award-winning journalist and feature writer for the Albany Times Union. He is the author of "Mayor Corning: Albany Icon, Albany Enigma."

 

A former Albany County historian, Jack McEneny is a well known teacher and speaker on local history, ethnicity and related fields. He is a member of the New York State Assembly and author of "Albany: Capital City on the Hudson."

Ivan D. Steen is Associate Professor of History at UAlbany. He is the author of "Erastus Corning 2nd and Democratic Politics in Albany, N.Y."
