Dr. Laura Schweitzer
VP, Health Sciences and Biomedical Initiatives

Dr. Laura Schweitzer joined UAlbany in September 2015 as vice president for health sciences and biomedical initiatives. In this role, she leads the exploration and development of planning to expand and align the University’s health sciences programs.

Her efforts, which are a major part of the University’s largest academic expansion in more than 50 years, more clearly highlight the tremendous strengths already existing at the University, and help the region and the state see the University’s exciting potential for enhancing the bio-medical sector of the regional economy.

In fall 2016, Dr. Schweitzer orchestrated the redesignation of the University’s East Campus in Rensselaer to the Health Sciences Campus to better highlight the strong intersection of academia, government and the private sector found there -- entities that collaborate in mutually beneficial ways to further the understanding of health and disease.

She actively partners with both regional and state health care leaders to implement academic programs and services that will help to prepare the next generation of health care professionals. Others are taking notice of these efforts too – U.S. News & World Report ranked Albany, New York third in the country to find technology jobs – just behind San Jose and San Francisco.

A neurobiologist by training, Dr. Schweitzer is highly committed to public engagement and the critical role of higher education in the community and as a driver of economic development. Learn more about Dr. Schweitzer.
