Details for "How to Succeed in Organizing a Writing Group":
Are you working on your dissertation and need help fleshing out your arguments? Are you preparing your prospectus and looking for an extra set of eyes (and ears) to clarify your concepts? Or, maybe you're just starting out and would like to get involved in a peer writing group that can give you feedback while you develop research questions, experiment with research methods, and develop literature reviews. A peer work group can help graduate students at any of these junctures develop cooperative relationships and practice both giving and receiving feedback on research development and writing. Join us for a workshop on Friday, 25 January 2013 from 11:30 Am to 1:00 PM at Husted Hall, Room 012 (Downtown campus) where Katie will present the components of and facilitate the creation of cross-cohort, cross-field writing and/or research peer groups. Share some food and get to know what other students are working on in the department!

3. Initiatives for Women
Initiatives for Women (IFW) benefits women students, faculty, and staff - and the University at Albany and our community as a whole - by providing them the means to advance their educational and professional goals. IFW awards, generally $500. to $1500., enhance the educational and career opportunities for women students, staff and faculty. These awards provide monetary awards for women pursuing education or research in any discipline. Some awards are specific for individuals planning a career in medicine, science, law, government, social welfare, and other areas. IFW awards also support any University person or group developing a program for the advancement of women or women concerns. Past recipients have used IFW funding to support a variety of endeavors including study abroad projects, research travel, speakers' fees and training attendance at conferences or training workshops.

These awards are presented at the annual IFW Summer Celebration. The 2013 ceremony is scheduled for July 18 in the Standish Room at 2:00pm.

5. SUNY Albany 11th Annual English 2012 Graduate Conference: Considering Relevance
SUNY Albany 11th Annual English 2013 Graduate Conference: Considering Relevance
March 8-9, 2013 -

Please see Call For Papers For our 11th Annual Conference, we invite graduate students of any discipline to consider the applications and effects of relevance. We schedule approximately 15 to 20 minutes for each presentation. For research or critical presentations, please submit a 250-word abstract to by January 18, 2013.

We are also seeking graduate student artists to submit proposals. The conference will offer an opportunity for presentations from creative writers, visual artists, performers, audio/video or digital artists, and any students actively engaged in other creative media, which would ideally include discussion about how your work deals with issues of relevance. We schedule approximately 15 to 20 minutes for each presentation. Please send an e-mail with a small sample of your creative work (.mp3, .jpeg, .tif, .avi, .mp4, or .doc files) as well as a 250-word description of your presentation to by January 18, 2013. Video projectors, computers, speakers, and other technologies can be arranged to supplement presentations.

Call for Papers and Panel Recommendations:
The Rockefeller College Graduate Association of Political Science (GAPS) is hosting its 1st Annual Rockefeller College Graduate Conference. The conference is currently scheduled for Friday, 1 March 2013, and the deadline for proposals is Friday, 14 December 2012 (Please click here for call for paper & panel recommendations).

The aim of the conference is to provide graduate students in the Capital Region an open venue for sharing their work and promote cross-discipline dialogue to improve the overall quality of graduate research. The conference also seeks to allow graduate students to present their work and receive peer and faculty feedback in a "low threat" environment without the pressure of a major academic conference.

The theme for the 2013 conference is Institutions & Societies, and we have left the definitions of these two concepts purposefully broad and vague to allow for the largest variation in the proposals. We have also not pre-formed any panels for the conference for the exact same reason - we will form the panels as we accept both paper and panel proposals.

We welcome proposals from area/regional studies, criminal justice, economics, education, environmental studies, gender studies, history, informatics, law, nano-economics, philosophy, political science, psychology, public administration & policy, organizational studies, sociology, social welfare, and urban planning as well as interdisciplinary proposals.

We ask you to only submit one paper per individual. You may, however, propose to present a group of papers as a single panel. When submitting an individual paper proposal, please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words. If you are proposing a panel, please keep in mind that there must be a minimum of three and a maximum of five papers to form a panel.

Stephen P. Heyneman received his doctorate in comparative education from the University of Chicago in 1976. He served the World Bank for 22 years. Between 1976 and 1984 he helped research education quality and design policies to support educational effectiveness. Between 1984 and 1989 he was in charge of external training for senior officials world wide in education policy. Between 1989 and 1998, he was responsible for education policy and lending strategy, first for the Middle East and North Africa and later for the 27 countries of Europe and Central Asia. In 1992, he served as president of the Comparative and International Education Society. Since 2000 he has served as professor of International Education Policy at Vanderbilt University.

8. PAHO/IHHR Training- Agenda and Working Groups
The recently established Institute for Health and Human Rights at UAlbany (IHHR) advocates for the promotion and protection of health and human rights for all. It achieves this through a variety of activities and in collaboration with different regional and international partners.

IHHR is presently partnering with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to conduct its firsttraining workshop on health and human rights which will take placeon February 2nd and 3rd at the University at Albany. This workshop is being organized for students involved with the IHHR/PAHO health and human rights projects from various universities across the country.

As part of this two day workshop, there will be two "open sessions", which are open to all students, to learn about the Institute's activities and the importance of linking health and human rights in various areas and disciplines. We would like to invite all students to join us for these special sessions which are open to all.

Open sessions:

Saturday, February 2nd, 10AM- 10:45AM: Opening Session

Saturday, February 2nd, 10:45-11:45: Panel with guest professors who will discuss the importance of linking health and human rights in their respective areas of work. They will also discuss the importance of the collaboration between IHHR and PAHO/WHO

Sunday February 3rd 2:00PM-4:00PM: Informational Session for all students who would like to find out more about the IHHR or would like to get involved in the activities that are being developed in collaboration with PAHO/WHO.

9. ESL Classes for Spring 2012
WHO: All classes are taught by experienced graduate students in the TESOL program, Department of Educational Theory and Practice.
WHAT: 3 levels of English classes. This course equals 36 hours or a 3-credit course (you will receive a certificate of completion, not SUNY credit)
WHEN: Classes are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:15- 9 p.m. from February 5 to March 14, 2013
Placement test is on TUESDAY, January 29, 2013 starting at 7:15 p.m. in EDU 115
WHERE: University at Albany, Education Building, Room 115.
HOW: Pay a non-refundable $45 class fee at the time of the placement test. Cash or checks only, please.
