1. GSO Grants Program Requesting Volunteers
The Grants Program is requesting volunteers for reviewing grant applications. This is a good opportunity to understand how the GSO Grant program evaluations function and may be a beneficial learning experience for future GSO grant applicants. You also fulfill RGSO committee requirements by volunteering to this committee. If you are applying for a grant for this Spring 2013 you may still volunteer to review. Please, if interested contact the grants chair at: gsogrant@gmail.com.


2. RGSO Committee Requesting Volunteers
The RGSO Committee is looking for volunteers to evaluate the Spring funding cycle for RGSO student groups!! If interested, please email gsovice@gmail.com. Funding evaluations will begin on February 7th. This will count as a committee requirement for the Spring semester.


3. Initiatives for Women deadline, March 1
Initiatives for Women (IFW) benefits women students, faculty, and staff - and the University at Albany and our community as a whole - by providing them the means to advance their educational and professional goals. IFW awards, generally $500. to $1500., enhance the educational and career opportunities for women students, staff and faculty. These awards provide monetary awards for women pursuing education or research in any discipline. Some awards are specific for individuals planning a career in medicine, science, law, government, social welfare, and other areas. IFW awards also support any University person or group developing a program for the advancement of women or women concerns. Past recipients have used IFW funding to support a variety of endeavors including study abroad projects, research travel, speakers' fees and training attendance at conferences or training workshops.

These awards are presented at the annual IFW Summer Celebration. The 2013 ceremony is scheduled for July 18 in the Standish Room at 2:00pm.

4. Jane Guskin discusses The Politics of Immigration
Jane Guskin is coauthor with David Wilson of The Politics of Immigration: Questions and Answers, published in July 2007 by Monthly Review Press. Guskin and Wilson are also coeditors, since 1990, of Weekly News Update on the Americas, a summary of Latin American news. In addition, Guskin edited Immigration News Briefs, a bulletin covering immigrationrelated news, from 1998 through 2008. In 1997 Guskin and Wilson helped found the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants, an all volunteer group mobilizing against workplace raids. From April 2002 to April 2004, they worked to free their colleague and friend, Farouk AbdelMuhti, from immigration detention. Guskin is codirector of the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute, a grassroots foundation supporting nonviolent action for social justice, where she has worked since 1993. She lives in New York City. 5. Study on LGBTQ Activism Seeks Volunteers
The purpose of the study is to explore the lives of young LGBTQ activists, who are often ignored and misrepresented in the scientific literature. This research will work to fill this gap by revealing the true experiences of young LGBTQ individuals and the ways in which they define their sexual identities and engage in sexual politics. The study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University at Albany, SUNY.

I am seeking volunteers who:
  • are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, unlabelled, queer or anything in between
  • have engaged in activism around LGBTQ issues (however you define it membership in a specific organization is not required nor is a minimum amount of activist participation) and
  • are between the ages of 18 25 years old.

Participation involves:
  • completing a one-on-one interview (lasting between 1 2 hours, time and location to be determined by you)

Participation in the study is completely voluntary and all information provided will be kept confidential. Upon completion of the interview, volunteers will receive $15 as a thank you for your time and participation.

Please see Call For Papers For our 11th Annual Conference, we invite graduate students of any discipline to consider the applications and effects of relevance. We schedule approximately 15 to 20 minutes for each presentation. For research or critical presentations, please submit a 250-word abstract to egsoalbany@gmail.com by January 18, 2013.

We are also seeking graduate student artists to submit proposals. The conference will offer an opportunity for presentations from creative writers, visual artists, performers, audio/video or digital artists, and any students actively engaged in other creative media, which would ideally include discussion about how your work deals with issues of relevance. We schedule approximately 15 to 20 minutes for each presentation. Please send an e-mail with a small sample of your creative work (.mp3, .jpeg, .tif, .avi, .mp4, or .doc files) as well as a 250-word description of your presentation to egsoalbany@gmail.com by January 18, 2013. Video projectors, computers, speakers, and other technologies can be arranged to supplement presentations.

Call for Papers and Panel Recommendations:
The Rockefeller College Graduate Association of Political Science (GAPS) is hosting its 1st Annual Rockefeller College Graduate Conference. The conference is currently scheduled for Friday, 1 March 2013, and the deadline for proposals is Friday, 14 December 2012 (Please click here for call for paper & panel recommendations).

The aim of the conference is to provide graduate students in the Capital Region an open venue for sharing their work and promote cross-discipline dialogue to improve the overall quality of graduate research. The conference also seeks to allow graduate students to present their work and receive peer and faculty feedback in a "low threat" environment without the pressure of a major academic conference.

The theme for the 2013 conference is Institutions & Societies, and we have left the definitions of these two concepts purposefully broad and vague to allow for the largest variation in the proposals. We have also not pre-formed any panels for the conference for the exact same reason - we will form the panels as we accept both paper and panel proposals.

We welcome proposals from area/regional studies, criminal justice, economics, education, environmental studies, gender studies, history, informatics, law, nano-economics, philosophy, political science, psychology, public administration & policy, organizational studies, sociology, social welfare, and urban planning as well as interdisciplinary proposals.

We ask you to only submit one paper per individual. You may, however, propose to present a group of papers as a single panel. When submitting an individual paper proposal, please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words. If you are proposing a panel, please keep in mind that there must be a minimum of three and a maximum of five papers to form a panel.

We are currently working on an IT solution where you can submit your proposals, but in the meantime, please submit your proposals to Rockefeller.gaps@gmail.com.

10. Call for Papers: The Informatics Department of the University of Albany presents The 8th Annual New Trends in Computing and Informatics Research (NTCIR) Conference
Friday, April 12th, 2013
Held in Milne 200, University of Albany, Downtown campus

OFFICIAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
We are looking for papers detailing research projects or graduate dissertations on subjects related to computerized Information Science topics. We will also have a poster display available for researchers to demonstrate progress on research that is not ready to be reported in a paper or presentation. Selected presenters and posters will be invited to present their research during the conference. Please design your presentation to last 30 minutes, including any questions and answers section.

Topics for consideration can include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Data Security and Information Assurance
  • Privacy, Governmental, and Societal issues
  • Business Information and Decision Systems
  • Decision and Policy Sciences
  • Information Technology and Learning
  • Organizational structures, both informational and institutional

12. NYS Writers Institute: Community Writers Workshops Spring 2013
REACHING OUT - SPRING 2013 Each semester the Writers Institute sponsors residencies of varying lengths by authors who have distinguished themselves both for their writing and their teaching. In tandem with these residencies free writing workshops are offered on a competitive basis to members of the community.

13. Call for Volunteers on the Student-Debt Preliminary Planning Committee
The SDPPC is calling for volunteers interested in helping their fellow students avoid and deal with debt. Many students graduate with tremendous amounts of personal debt which can significantly impact their quality of life. Part of the reason for this is students often lack good information on how to avoid debt and how to deal with debt when it occurs. This committee will develop ways to disseminate helpful information. The ideas of this committee would be brought to administrative and student-government attention for possible implementation.

14. SEA Change Presents: Introductory Workshop on Software for Qualitative Data Analysis
Join us for an introductory workshop on software for qualitative data analysis. It is a great opportunity to learn more about software that can help you in a research project, master's thesis and/or dissertation.

Juliana Svistova, an advanced PhD student of the School of Social Welfare, will share her knowledge on NVivo, one of the various software available to conduct qualitative analysis and give us some hands on tips to begin using the software!

16. Tango Lessons at UA - Free to students!
We will hold tango lessons in the dance studio located on the third floor of the athletic center behind the track (side nearest to Western Avenue). The lessons are open to all. You don't need prior experience to join. You may come with or without a partner. Wear shoes that slide well on the dance floor. If you don't have such shoes, just wear socks.

Classes will run every* Sunday from 3-5pm from 1/27 to 5/5.

The lessons are free to students. Non-students pay $80 for the whole semester or $15/class drop-in fee.

Tango Instructor Bio: Kevin Magee is the organizer and founder of the Albany Tango Society, presenting tango events in Albany since 2007. Through the auspices of the Albany Tango Society Kevin teaches six levels of tango instruction and presents free weekly classes to the community. As an organizer and presenter, Kevin has hosted over two hundred guest instructors-performers to the Capital Region, drawing from the top echelon of tango dancers world-wide. Kevin is an instructor at Emma Willard School (Troy, NY) teaching ballet, modern dance, jazz, and tango. He also teaches tango through the Student Union at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY). Prior to his work in tango, Kevin performed contemporary choreography with False Alarm, Peter Sparling and Dancers, Second Wind Dance Co., and Ellen Sinopoli Dance Co. From 1991-2007 Kevin instructed modern dance, ballet, and jazz technique, and lectured in contemporary choreography, dance history, and cultural studies at colleges and universities throughout the US. Kevin received his MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois (1991) with an emphasis in contemporary performance, choreography, and pedagogy.
