1. Important Printer Reminder

This is a friendly reminder to all graduate students that the computers in the GSA's office are not for use for research purposes. The printers in the office are allocated strictly for printing and we ask that as long as there are others waiting all students keep their time occupying the computers to 10 minutes or less. Thank you for your understanding!

4. Presidential Forum
On November 4th 2013, we will be holding a Presidential Forum in conjunction with Student Association (undergraduate). This forum is an opportunity for students to pose questions and concerns to the President. Our goal is to have 5 main issues our student body is concerned about, to develop the our conversation with the president around. 5. GSA Online Voucher System
The GSA is transitioning to an online voucher system. In order for RGSO's to get reimbursed in the Spring semester they will need to complete mandatory online voucher training this Fall. All RGSO's must delegate one representative to be responsible for attending this training. The selected representative should email their name and contact information to the GSA Treasurer (Jessica) at gsatreas@albany.edu, by Oct. 1, 2013.


6. ITLAL's Future Faculty Downtown Office Hours
Do you get lost trying to find the ITLAL office? Maybe you live and/or take classes downtown? ITLAL's Future Faculty Fellow, Katie Truby, will hold office hours on the downtown campus this semester just for you! Katie will be available on the following Mondays to answer any questions you might have about teaching, getting ready for the job market, managing your time in graduate school, or succeeding in your future career as a faculty member. Look for Katie in Milne 118, the nice, new, cozy graduate student lounge on the following Mondays from 2:30-4:30 on 10/28, 11/4, 11/18 and 12/2. Monday's don't work for you? Shoot Katie an email at futurefacultyfellow@albany.edu and set up an appointment downtown!


7. Planned Parenthood Volunteers
Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood is looking for volunteers to canvas for the upcoming Affordable Care Act. Do you have any organizations or students that are interested in helping in a major outreach campaign to educate community residents about the new health care law (Obamacare)? Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood is conducting door to door neighborhood canvassing between now and the end of October on Tuesdays evenings and Saturday mornings. Starting January 1, 2014, all Americans (with some exceptions) will have to have health insurance. Starting October 1, 2013, thousands of people will be eligible for expanded Medicaid or new more affordable health insurance plans. Premiums for these plans will be more than 50% lower than what is available now. Health insurance plans will no longer be able to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Financial help may be available to make these new health insurance plans more affordable. BUT, most people who are eligible know very little or nothing about this new law or about how to enroll. This is why we need to help with this educational campaign. To get involved, contact Blue Carreker at (518) 434-5678 x133 or at blue@uhpp.org. (We need a minimum of ten volunteers per canvas.)

9. Invitation to Join Committee on University & Community Relations
The Committee on University and Community Relations is looking for a graduate student to begin attending meetings as a GSA representative. The meetings are held at 7 p.m. every 2nd Wednesday of the month (except for January) held at the Albany Police Department Center Station (2nd floor meeting room). 10. Ed Psychology & Methodology/ITLAL Payroll The Educational Psychology and Methodology RGSO is collaborating with ITLAL this Fall 2013 to host a speaker who will facilitate workshops to students and faculty members. ITLAL would like for us to conduct a general and informal poll to get a sense of what topics are of interest to graduate students and faculty members. Would you please take a few seconds of your time to fill out this poll? It would be a great help to us in carrying out another successful Ed Psych RGSO and ITLAL collaboration event! 11. Sustainability Office looking for Graduate Student to Present Research
The Sustainability Office is looking for a graduate student to present research on a sustainability related topic on November 11th. All roundtables are held on Mondays between 1 and 2pm in the Standish Room (located in the Science Library). 12. Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program If you are looking for a great way to begin your career, please consider the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program. This federally-sponsored program was started over 30 years ago by executive order to attract the best and the brightest to federal service. Many people have used the program to launch successful careers in the private sector and academe as well. Those selected into the PMF program receive: *160 hours of classroom training (on leadership, management, policy and other topics)
*Challenging work assignments
*Feedback on your work
*At least one 4 to 6 month developmental assignment
*Potential for promotions and career ladders
*Upon certification of completion, which permits immediate conversion to a permanent or term position and carries prestige anywhere you go thereafter

13. Ed Psychology RGSO Brown Bag Dr. Tobias and Dr. Fletcher: Research in Educational Technology
Wednesday October 16th, 2013

Dr. Tobias, an eminent professor at UAlbany, and Dr. Fletcher from the Institute for Defence Analysis will be discussing the impact and effectiveness of educational technology in general, and computer tutors in particular, on learning. 15. Women in Middle East
Monday, October 21st - Friday, October 25th, 2013 This week long series of events are held in collaboration with the Office of International Education, The Global Institute for Health and Human Rights, the New York Writer's Institute, the Department of Women's Studies, the Music Department, the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society at Rockefeller. Each day is centered on a theme - women in the performing arts; social change and activism; law and religion; or democracy, human rights, and higher education.


16. ITLAL Seminar on Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy for an Academic Job Search Thursday, October 17, 2013 2:30 to 4:00 pm in the ITLAL Underground (Library 069) It's the new norm: when you enter the academic search process you need to be ready to show and speak in depth aboutyour statement of teaching philosophy. In this active and interactive workshop, you will reflect on the key beliefs and teaching behaviors from your own courses that you should articulate and emphasize in your statement. We will also identify the qualities of an effective statement, evaluate samples, and consider possibilities for effectively organizing a teaching philosophy. You will leave with a beginning draft of your statement.

Journal of International Students The Journal of International Students is, "an academic, interdisciplinary, and peer-reviewed publication (Print ISSN2162-3104 & Online ISSN 2166-3750) on international student affairs published from the United States of America. The goal of the Journal is to feature narrative, theoretical and empirically-based research articles, student/faculty reflections, study abroad experience, and book reviews relevant to international students and their cross-cultural experiences and understanding in higher education" (http://jistudents.org/). You can find a free copy of the most current issue of the journal attached to the listserv.


19. Therapy Dog Days of October!! Take a "paws" with Therapy Dogs on the East Campus! On Monday, October 7th, there will be a Therapy Dog Study Break Event on the East Campus from 12pm to 2pm! It's in Room C3. It is sponsored by the School of Public Health and Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program. We hope to see you there!

On Wednesday, October 16th, there will be a Therapy Dog Study Break Event on the Main Campus in the Campus Center's TV Lobby and West Lounge from 12pm to 4pm. It's sponsored by the School of Public Health, Disability Resource Center and Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program. We hope to see you there!

20. Medicative Mondays
Jump-start your week with a guided meditation every Monday evening in The Interfaith Center from 6pm - 6:45pm. The sessions are open to all and FREE as these are your GSA funds and student activity fee at work! No prior experience of yoga/meditation is required. Lets breathe, lets meditate, lets live! 22. Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Internships Internship #1: The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites applicants for a paid internship in e-learning software development. Applicants should be current students in computer science, information technology or a related discipline. Up to 20 hours of work per week will be available, depending on class schedule, at an hourly rate commensurate with experience. Applicants should have completed at least one course in computer programming. Experience in web programming using JavaScript or ActionScript is preferred. Experience with Adobe tools is desirable. Internship #2: Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences seeks a responsible and reliable person for an Instructional Design Internship to help develop technology-based instructional tools for innovative learning experiences in all teaching modes, including face-to-face, hybrid and distance learning. The intern will join the Instructional Design team and be mentored by the Director of Instructional Design Services. This is a paid internship position. 23. Paid Graduate Assistantship with The Assembly The Assembly is very eager to hire a graduate assistant for the Assembly Internship program. Please pass along to any candidates that you may know. The Assembly Internship Program seeks to hire a Graduate Assistant for the general time frame of January 2013 through June 2014; interviews and notification will be provided this summer. 24. Benevolent Association Research Grant The Benevolent Association Research Grant provides support up to $500 for graduate student Research related to dissertation projects or master's theses. Interested applicants should submit application materials to the Department Chair by October 7, 2013 for the fall round of competition and January 27, 2014 for the spring round of competition. 25. GAPS & SEA Change Seminar
SEA Change invites you to our "Introduction to quantitative analysis software 'R'", presented by an advanced Ph.D. student from the Department of Economics. 'R' is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS. As some of you may know, 'R' is really gaining its momentum in quantitative research. The main reason? Well, it is free! What's more, it is absolutely not an inferior software to any alternatives (SPSS, SAS and STATA). On the contrary, bright brains from all over the world are contributing packages to 'R' and you can do virtually everything you can imagine for data analysis. Please join us and get to know 'R'!
