Art 526 (Thr 526) Studio Work in Electronic Music and Media (3)

This course will provide students with basic studio techniques for field recording, digital audio editing, signal processing, and composition. Projects will reflect a variety of aesthetic approaches and disciplines from the experimental tradition in Electronic Music to sound art, multimedia applications, and related fields. Prerequisites: Mus 325 or equivalent and/or permission of instructor.

Art 527 (Thr 527) Seminar in Electronic Music and Media (3)

This course is an advanced seminar in sound design, audio art, electronic musical composition and related fields, with an emphasis on evaluation and discussion of creative studio work produced by students. A continuation of studies initiated in Mus 426/Art 426/Art 526 with a focus on advanced techniques and aesthetics. Prerequisite: Art 526.

Art 528 (Thr 528) Sound Design and Multimedia (3)

Theory and techniques of how sound and music are composed for use in multi-media fields, including Theatre, the World Wide Web, installation art, CD-ROM and video. Students will work on original projects in their respective disciplines. The focus of this course will vary. Prerequisites: Mus 325, 426 and/or permission of instructor.

Art 546 Nonsilver Photography Workshop (3)

Designed for those already familiar with the methods of applying light- sensitive emulsions to various materials. The graduate student will be involved in advanced approaches to nonsilver photography. The work produced must show mastery of advanced techniques and meet appropriate aesthetic standards. Work and progress is reviewed in individual conferences.

Art 547 Phototechniques for Printmakers (3)

Designed for those already possessing knowledge of advanced etching and lithographic printing techniques. The printmaker will learn to expose and process film and apply the resultant image to an etching and/or lithographic plate. Progress is reviewed in individual conferences. Students will undertake multiple-plate printmaking techniques. Limited to six printmakers. Prerequisite: Knowledge of etching and hand lithography techniques.

Intensive group critique forum bringing together students working in any area in the Department of Art MFA program, moderated by the instructor. Frequent, informal discussions of critical texts and the work of contemporary artists also occur in a focused effort to further develop one’s artistic vocabulary. May be repeated once for credit.
