Fre 500A Intensive Introduction to French (3)

Accelerated introduction to the French language with stress on reading comprehension. S/U grading.

Fre 500B Intensive Introduction to French (3)

Accelerated introduction to the French language with stress on reading comprehension. Prerequisite: Fre 500A or consent of instructor.

Fre 501 Teaching French: Methods and Issues (3)

Readings, discussions and applications of current methods and issues in second language teaching and research to the teaching of French. Required of all teaching assistants.

Fre 502 Applied French Linguistics (3)

Application of linguistic analysis to the teaching of French.  A research project will be required of students in 502.  Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Fre 505 Approaches to French Society and Culture (3)

Training in the systematic observation and analysis of written, oral and visual documents concerning social, political, economic and cultural phenomena in contemporary France. Survey of the basic bibliography in the field, with emphasis on the use of the analytical tools necessary for further study.

Fre 506 French Linguistics: Morphology and Syntax (3)

Survey of the structure of the French language in the light of current linguistic theory. Emphasis will be on the fields of morphology and syntax. A research project is required. Prerequisite: Lin 220 or consent of instructor.

Fre 510 Structure of French (3)

Introduction to the linguistic description of present-day French with an emphasis on the acquisition of analytical skills necessary for further study.

Fre 511 French Sociolinguistics (3)

An examination of regional and social variation in present-day French of varieties of French spoken outside of France. Prerequisite: French 510 or consent of instructor.

Fre 512 Approaches to French Literature (3)

Study of the critical and theoretical responses to literature at selected moments in the field. Survey of the basic bibliography with emphasis on the use of the analytical tools necessary for further study.

Fre 513 History of the French Language (3)

This course will examine the history of the French language from two different points of view.  The external perspective considers the social and political forces which have affected changes in the language over time.  The internal perspective studies the specific phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic changes which have taken place.  Students will gain some fluency in reading Old and Middle French texts.  Prerequisites: Fre 510, Lin 220 or permission of the instructor.

Fre 515 French Cinema and Society (3)

Form, composition, social, and cultural analysis of selected commercial feature films and scenarios by major French directors from the 1930s to the 1970s. A research project is required.

Fre 530 Translation (3)

This course will deal with both the theoretical and practical aspects of translation, with regular exercises in the translation (from French to English and from English to French) of a wide variety of texts (literary, scientific, journalistic, economic, poetic, etc.). Students are required to work on an independent project throughout the course.

Fre 540 Writing French with Style (3)

Intensive practice of written French through close analysis of grammar and stylistic study of selected works. Aims to strenghten and develop competency in different styles of writing: creative, argumentative, analytical. Prerequisite: AFRE340Z

Fre 550 French Speech Styles (3)

Training in conversational mastery of spoken French with emphasis on various speech styles: soigne, familier, populaire. Close attention is paid to the grammatical and lexical analysis of these styles, their cultural implications and social contexts. A research project is required.

Fre 555 Life and Letters (3)

Exploration of the historical and cultural as well as literary aspects of a particular period or movement. May be repeated once for credit when the content changes. A research project is required.

Fre 570 Commercial and Economic French (3)

Advanced mastery of the linguistic and cultural tools required to communicate in a French-speaking economic environment.

Fre 581 Francophone Literatures (3)

Literature written in French by African, Canadian, and Caribbean authors. Emphasis of course will vary from one semester to the other. Course may be repeated twice with different subject emphasis. A research project is required.

Fre 598 Face to Face (3)

Seminar devoted to the works of a visiting major figure on contemporary French thought, letters, film, or art. Taught by a regular faculty member in cooperation with the visiting author or artist. A research project is required.

Fre 599 Special Topics in French Studies (3)

Readings and discussion of various topics in French Studies; may be repeated for credit when topic changes.

Fre 605 French Social Structure (3)

Selected topics on social class relations. Variable content; may be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Fre 505.

Fre 611 Topics in Francophone Linguistics (3)

The course offers an indepth examination of selected linguistic and sociolinguishic aspects of one or more francophone speech communities located outside of France.  Course may be repeated with different subject emphasis.  Prerequisite:  Fre 510 or permission of the instructor.

Fre 614 (Eng 542) Critical Theory and Methods (4)

Critical thought in literature and the fine arts; traditional and contemporary critical approaches. Variable content; may be repeated for credit when content differs. Prerequisite: Fre 512.

Fre 615 French Cinema (3)

A study of two or three major French directors, their styles, themes, and sociocultural portraits of France. Prerequisite: Fre 505.

Fre 682 Emergence of a Literature (3)

Intensive study of major themes and topics in medieval and Renaissance literature.

Fre 683 From Classicism to the Enlightenment (3)

Intensive study of major themes and topics in 17th- and 18th-century literature.

Fre 684 Modernism (3)

Intensive study of major themes and topics in nineteenth- and twentieth- century literature. Course may be repeated for credit when topic varies.

Fre 691 Special Topics (1-4)

Readings and discussion of various topics in French Studies; may be repeated for credit when topic changes. S/U graded.

Fre 692 Special Topics (3)

Study of selected topics in French or Francophone studies.

Fre 694 Directed Readings in French (1-6)

A course of reading designed primarily for Master of Arts candidates intending to cover major developments within a historical period in which they have received relatively little formal instruction. Readings are to be supplemented by discussions with the sponsoring professor.

Fre 696A,B Graduate Study at the University of Grenoble (3-12,3-12)

Projects in selected areas of French Studies for gradute students who are on an assistantship or a fellowship in France.

Fre 697 Independent Study in French (2-4)

Projects in selected areas of French studies for graduate students, with regular progress reports. May be repeated once when topics differ for a total of 4 credits. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair.

Fre 699 Master's Thesis in French (2-6)

Fre 700 Internship/Practicum Seminar (3)

Close work with faculty-mentor in the preparation of a course beyond the 200-level and teaching of specific portions of the course. This will take place within the University (Practicum) or as a nonteaching internship experience off campus.

Fre 771 Seminar in Language & Linguistics (4)

Intensive study of selected topics in language and linguistics, designed for doctoral students, culminating in an individual research project. Prerequisite: Fre 510, consent of Graduate Advisor.

Fre 772 Seminar in Society and Culture (4)

Intensive study of selected topics in society and culture, designed for doctoral students, culminating in an individual research project. Prerequisite: Fre 505, consent of Graduate Advisor.

Fre 773 Seminar in Literature & the Arts (4)

Intensive study of selected topics in literature and the arts, designed for doctoral students, culminating in an individual research project. Prerequisite: Fre 512, consent of Graduate Advisor.

Fre 783 Directed Readings in Literature and the Arts (2-4)

A course in reading designed primarily by the student under the direct supervision of a member of the faculty to explore a significant problem of interest in Literature and the arts. Prerequisite: Consent of Graduate Advisor.

Fre 893 General Readings in French Studies (1-12)

Individual work in preparation for qualifying exams for the Ph.D. in French Studies. Students registering for Fre 893 indicate the portion of their total semester load devoted to it by listing an appropriate number of "load equivalent units" instead of credits. Consent of the Graduate Advisor required.

Fre 894 Directed Readings in French (2-4)

Exploration of a significant problem of interest in French Studies through readings.
