For students whose native language is something other than English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. The exam is used to evaluate a student’s English proficiency as related to being successful at Albany. Students enrolled as full-time students for a minimum of two semesters in U.S. colleges do not have to submit TOEFL scores.
The minimum TOEFL score required by most programs is 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based), although a number of academic departments require significantly higher results. The TESOL program requires applicants to submit TOEFL results of at least 250 (computer) and 600 (paper). The department of Social Welfare requires the Test of Spoken English (TSE) for all international applicants. The masters degree program in Counseling Psychology also requires applicants to submit TSE results. The Department of Psychology requires the TSE as well as the Test of Written English (TWE).
