Major and Minor in Planning

Undergraduate Major in Urban Studies and Planning

This is a 36-hour interdisciplinary major offered by the Department of Geography and Planning, which introduces students to urban studies and urban planning. The core requirement for the major is a block of six introductory courses (18-19 credits), all of which are available in the Department, either as Geography (GOG) or Planning (PLN) courses. Three of the six are required, namely: Introductory Urban Planning (PLN 220); World Cities (GOG 225); and The American City (GOG 125); the remaining three can be selected from a range of 200 and 300 level courses, including Urban Geography (GOG 220); The City on Computer (GOG 324); State and Regional Planning (PLN 315); Principles of Environmental Management (GOG/PLN 330); and International Urban Planning (PLN 320). The heart of the major requires students to take four Planning courses at the 400 level, many of which are jointly offered as graduate-level courses. Included in the list of courses for this requirement are Planning Internship courses (PLN 490A and 490B); Independent Study in Planning (PLN 497); and techniques course such as Geographic Information Systems (GOG 496/PLN 456), and Computer Aided Design in Planning (PLN 452).

The major is completed by the student taking two courses in any of the following cognate disciplines: Anthropology, Economics, Education, History, Politics, and Sociology. Specific courses have been selected from each of these departments, and are listed in the Undergraduate Bulletin. If a student has difficulty enrolling for a second course in a specific cognate discipline, he/she may, with permission from the advisor, be allowed to take a course in one of the other listed disciplines.

Note: students choosing to major in both Geography and Urban Studies and Planning are allowed to ‘double-count’ up to five courses (15 credits).
