UAlbany Women's Basketball Team Recognized by Capital Region Legislators

May 3, 2016 – The women’s basketball team was honored and recognized by members of the Capital Region legislative delegation in both the NYS Senate and Assembly chambers for their outstanding achievements in the 2015-16 season, culminating with their fifth consecutive trip back to the NCAA Tournament and first victory, by defeating the University of Florida to advance to the second round. The team was joined by its new head coach, Joanna Bernabei-McNamee (Coach Mac).

$10 Million NIH Endowment Grant Announced

April 27, 2016 – UAlbany announced, that with the support of a $10 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) endowment grant, it will launch a major public engagement initiative to address the future of minority health disparities in the Northeastern United States. The endeavor is spearheaded by the University's Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities (CEMHD) with support through NIH’s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD).

SUNY Day, Washington, DC

April 19-20, 2016 – UAlbany participated in SUNY Day in Washington, DC to advocate for increased federal support for higher education. While in town, UAlbany President Robert Jones and senior staff met with our Semester in Washington Program students for a luncheon program featuring Alexis Bonnell, Chief of Applied Innovation and Acceleration at the US Agency for International Development (USAID). UAlbany was among several campuses represented at the annual alumni and Congressional reception which brings together alumni, elected officials and legislative staff to network and learn about the exciting work going on at each institution.

Support for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

February 23, 2016 – Capital Region community, business, education and government leaders announced unified support for the University at Albany’s plan to transform a century-old former public school building into a home for its new College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), and requested $20 million in the state budget to start the project. Locating CEAS in the middle of the City of Albany marks the next phase in a deepening partnership between the Capital Region's comprehensive public research university, its home city and the larger region.

Stand With SUNY

November 30, 2015 – State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, led a panel discussion on campus with State legislators and area college presidents along with UAlbany President Robert Jones and SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman H. Carl McCall to “Stand With SUNY,” announcing the launch of the statewide advocacy campaign urging public support for the University System, its campuses, students, faculty, and staff.

Support for Federal Perkins Loan Program

November 2, 2015 – UAlbany President Robert Jones, in solidarity with area college presidents, stood with New York State Senator Charles E. Schumer as he called on his Senate colleagues to immediately reauthorize and extend the Federal Perkins Loan Program. Participants included Capital Region institutions whose students depend on Perkins loans including Brother Edward Coughlin, president of Siena College; Alicia Ouelette, president and dean of Albany Law School; Drew Matonak, president of HVCC; and John Ebersole, president of Excelsior College.

US Representative Chris Gibson Visits The RNA Institute

September 1, 2015 – US Representative Chris Gibson visited The RNA Institute to learn more about the role of RNA in addressing the development of RNA technologies for therapeutics to treat the most difficult infectious diseases, including those of wounded warriors both on and off the battlefield, and recommended funding for a study of RNA-based therapeutics to treat the symptoms of persistent Lyme disease.

May 4, 2015 – The men’s and women’s basketball teams were honored and recognized by members of the Capital Region legislative delegation in both the NYS Senate and NYS Assembly chambers for their outstanding achievements in the 2015 season, culminating with a trip back to the NCAA Tournament – the fourth consecutive time for the women and third for the men.

SUNY Chancellor Talk

December 16, 2014 – State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher met with UAlbany students to discuss her goals for access, completion, and success, and her plan to ask the Governor for an investment fund to help the System expand evidence-based practices that drive student success across its campuses. This event afforded our students the opportunity to “speak out” and share their experiences and goals, including how NYSUNY 2020 has enhanced them.
