The University at Albany spends approximately $7 million on electricity and over $15 million in utility costs annually. In order to improve the University's sustainability efforts, the Task Force's Energy Use committee and Office of Environmental Sustainability assesses energy use, promotes energy conservation, and strides to implement green technologies on campus. These actions help reduce air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and produce significant cost savings.
Initiatives & Projects
 |
Intersession Energy Saving Initiative
During the winter intersession, the university will implement energy conservation measures from December 20th to January 15th. The Energy Savings Initiative web page has posted estimate savings, building shutdown dates, and other useful information. |

 |
Energy Scorecard
The energy scorecard is used to benchmark UAlbany's utility usage. Currently, we only have data for the residence halls from Spring 2007 to Fall 2008. |

 |
UAlbany Energy Campaign
UAlbany promotes the conservation of electricity consumption in it's Residence Halls (Indian, State, Dutch, Colonial, and Alumni Quads) and University Apartments (Empire Commons and Freedom Apartments) by giving students the opportunity to earn rewards for saving electricity. The electricity usage of each residence hall and apartment is monitored and updated weekly on the UAlbany Energy Campaign website.

Change a Light Campaign
On October 22, 2008 (National Campus Sustainability Day), Interim President George M. Phillip kicked-off the "Change a Light" campaign. Hundreds of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were distributed to students in an effort to raise energy awareness and conservation. The old incandescent bulbs will be used in an art exhibit at the University Museum. |

Empire Commons Electricity Bills
The Office of Environmental Sustainability is distributing 'simulation' electricity bills to residences living in Empire Commons. Over 300 bills will be given to over 1,000 students living in the apartment complex. The bills are intended to inform students on the amount of electricity they consume per week/month. |
