Established in honor of William D. Powers, a former Marine sergeant who served five years active duty in the U.S. Marine Corp, The Marine Sergeant William D. Powers Scholarship provides support for enlisted or honorably discharged Marines pursuing a degree at the University at Albany.

For 35 years, the volunteers of Five Quad, UAlbany’s student-run ambulance service, have responded quickly to calls for help. In 2008, graduating seniors gave Five Quad an assist – by designating their class gift toward the purchase of a new ambulance.

Gary Jacobson Scholar Sadia Mobeen, 19, is a sophomore who intends to major in biology. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is on her way to attaining her career goal, gynecologist: Last summer, she volunteered at Coney Island Hospital in the OB-GYN, pediatrics and neonatal units.

Thanks to funding from the Lita and Stephen Greenwald, '40, Research Fund, Nichols is researching the possible causes of Alzheimer's in order to develop drugs to combat it. The experience left her with new insights into the medical world and offered a preview of the type of research conducted in medical school.

Staten Island was also the hometown of UAlbany graduate Scott McGovern. Following his death in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, McGovern's wife, Jill; a number of their friends; and many of his former classmates established the Scott M. McGovern '87 Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory.
