The Barnes and Noble Achievers Scholarship

Noni Murphy

“I’m a senior this year and have loved my time here,” declares Noni Murphy, recipient of The Barnes and Noble Achievers Scholarship. When Noni was choosing a college, UAlbany made the most sense financially for her and her scholarship has helped her achieve her dreams. “I want to enjoy my last year and do really well in school. I want to make sure I do all the things I had planned to do while here!”

And there are many. Noni is a vocal performance major with a minor in psychology. Her classes have kept her busy and engaged during her time at UAlbany. “My most memorable professor is Dr. Victoria von Arx, my piano teacher. She is personable and warm toward her classes. I’ve enjoyed my time with her.” Noni is also the vice president of Phenomenal Voices, the student performance group on campus, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first Greek-lettered sorority established by African American college women.

When Noni thinks back on her time at UAlbany, there are two locations she can call her favorite spots on campus. “I used to live on Indian Quad, so the pond is my favorite place. In the fall, the colors of the leaves are so pretty to see. It’s very relaxing there and a nice atmosphere. I also enjoy the Performing Arts Center where I can simply stop by and the play the pianos available to students.”

After graduation in May, she’d like to put her musical talents to use and begin auditioning on Broadway. She’s also considering graduate school where she would pursue a degree in music and therapy. “My ultimate goal in life is to be happy with what I’m doing,” she says. It’s clear UAlbany has given Noni a foundation to achieve just that.
