The Solotar Family Scholarship

Justin Billups

Accounting major Justin Billups is always thinking ahead. The 19-year-old sophomore, who calls New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood home, would like to pursue master’s studies at UAlbany after graduation and earn a C.P.A. And he’s already exploring such career options as tax auditing and forensic accounting.

For a second straight year, Billups has received the Solotar Family Scholarship, an award that means a great deal to him because “the University was one of my top choices.” He first visited UAlbany as a high-school junior, and when he returned for orientation prior to his freshman year, “I loved it,” notes the business-administration minor. “There were so many people and there was so much to do, and it was close to home.”

So far, “one of my favorite classes is Business Law with Professor [Joseph] Sheehan,” says Billups. “He gets straight to the point, which I like.”

A member of ABLE (Albany Business Leaders Emerging), Billups has been looking into the possibility of participating in “some intramural sports, like basketball or football.” Off campus, he is active with MLT (Managing Leadership for Tomorrow), a business-oriented group that offered him another link to UAlbany by pairing him with mentor Smiley Rojas, a 2014 UAlbany graduate who works as a fundraising professional in New York City.
