Equipment Needed For Field
Mapping - GEO 400 - 2006
You should bring the following personal equipment:
Clothing
You should use your own best judgment as to the kind of clothing in
which you feel comfortable in the field, but your clothing must include
stout footwear (preferably boots), and rainproof overclothes.
Camping Gear
- sleeping bag
- air mattress or pad
- personal toilet articles
- knife, fork, spoon, plate, cup and soup bowl
- mosquito repellant
- lantern or flashlight
- tent (with flysheet), groundsheet;
- optional - stove, camp cooking utensils (Department can provide
this, but you are free to bring your own)
Field equipment
- - compass (with clinometer) - Suunto MC-1D recommended; Silva
Ranger TC-15D
is ok.
- - handlens (preferably X10 magnification - not less than 8X or
more than
12X)
- - geological hammer
- - notebook - must be bound and pocketable (loose leaf is not
acceptable)
- - several H or 2H pencils (a retractable lead type is
recommended, e.g.
Staedler-Mars)
- - pencil sharpener (or knife)
- - colored pencils
- - eraser
- - protractor
- - small ruler
- - indelible ink pen (one is recommended - e.g. the disposable
Mars or Pentel
Ceramicron). Get point size 0.3 or 0.35mm. If you get two, get point
size
0.2 or 0.25mm next.
- - simple map case (may be made by hingeing two pieces of masonite
not smaller
than 9 x 11½" together with strong adhesive tape, or a clipboard
in a strong plastic bag will serve)
- - large transparent plastic bag to protect map case and maps in
the event
of rain (Ziploc recommended)
- - day pack (for lunch, raingear, rock specimens, etc.)
- [dilute hydrochloric acid in a small plastic bottle, and base maps,
will
be provided by the Department.]
