Objectives: This class is the one synthesis course for Geology and Earth Science, where undergraduate students can integrate all of the materials previously learnt into a global framework of geological space and time. All graduate students are expected to achieve competent knowledge of Tectonics as an overall context for the geological sciences on this planet.

Reading/study materials: Text recommended: Kearey, P., and Vine, F.J., Global Tectonics (2nd or later edition). Additional material including research articles and short text extracts will be available on the course website.

Grading:         Two 1-hour interim exams, 20% each                    40%
                        2 hour Final exam, 30%                                        30%
                        Lab Exercises (some in part take home)                30%
                        Attendance & class participation                             +/-5%
Graduate students [and anyone else registered in GEO 517, and those taking GEO 395Z in combination with Tectonics] must also complete the term paper assignment (see the registered student website for details)
