GEO 331  --  Field Excursions for Structural Geology I --  Spring 2008

Saturdays and/or Sundays, 8.30-5.30, selected from April 5-6, 12-13, 26-27.
Introductory matter and detailed arrangements for each field trip will be announced the day before in Structural Geology Lab - Friday 1.40-3.40 - ES B18

Four day-long field trips [required attendance] will take place on days selected from April 5-6, 12-13, 26-27.
April 26-27 will only be used as "rain days" if the weather is very wet [icy?] on more than one of the previous selected weekends.
Meeting point will be outside east end of the Earth Science building for immediate departure at 8.30am; return by 5.30pm. Arrrangements will be made [if necessary] to pick up anyone living in/near the "downtown" dorms, so that they do not have to depend on the bus service to get to campus in the morning.

Assessment:
Field trip reports and notebook:  A comprehensive written and illustrated report will be required for three of the trips, and detailed notes in the notebook for all four trips.  Grading will be based on the reports, and the field notes.  Reports must be submitted no later than 6 days after the trip; last report must be submitted before/on 5th May.

Planned trips:
1. Catskill Rte 23; and 23A; Mt Ida - folds, faults, Acadian outer fold-and-thrust belt
2.  Rte 149 Clifton Park; Poestenkill Falls Troy; Thruway exit B2; exit B3; Lee School - Taconic section, structures and metamorphism
3.  Lake George I-87 exit 21; exit 23; Hudson R. N of Warrensburg - Grenville igneous and metamorphic features at high grade.
4. Wolf Hollow; Manny Corners quarry; Chuctanunda Creek; The Noses; Canajoharie Creek; East Canada Creek; Little Falls, Moss Island - Mohawk Valley normal faults
