Eric F. Gardner Conference |

Conference History
|
In the Spring of 1964, Dave Farr (Statistics & Measurement, SUNY Buffalo) invited students and faculty from Buffalo, Cornell, Rochester, and Syracuse to a small conference. That conference became an annual event, adding in subsequent years Albany, Ontario Institute, Ottawa, and Queen's. The conference was referred to only as the Upstate New York Measurement and Statistics Conference until, at the Spring 1978 meeting in Syracuse, it was renamed The Eric F. Gardner Conference to honor Eric's extensive contributions on the occasion of his forthcoming "retirement."
The responsibility for organizing the conference rotates among the participating institutions. The organizing institution historically sponsors a series of papers related to statistics and measurement, where graduate student participation is stressed. However, presentation of papers is only half of the purpose of the conference; of equal importance is the social component. People with similar interests from nearby institutions renew old friendships and form new ones over lunch and dinner. At the end of a long day, it is not unusual to hear participants say that the Gardner Conference is the most worthwhile meeting they attend each year. |
