Michael Werner

Michael Werner is Associate Professor of Roman Provincial Archaeology. He has an Honors-Classical A.B. from Gonzaga University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He also serves as City Archaeologist for the City of Albany. His research, supported by NEH, NSF and Smithsonian grants, and publications have focused on the Balkan provinces of the Roman empire for the last 30 years. He has completed specialized programs in archaeology and historic preservation from the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), Rome, Italy; the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Washington, D.C.; and the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, Montpelier, Vermont. He teaches courses in Roman archaeology and ancient history; he directs the Viminacium Field School, a teaching excavation and research project at a Roman legionary base on the Danube in Serbia.
