Karl G. Kilts

Karl G. Kilts, a 1995 alumnus of the University, joined the Department of Public Safety in 1986. As a public safety officer, he is responsible for conducting interviews, collecting evidence, preparing reports on his investigations, crisis intervention, and providing safety and security services to the University community.

Kilts is known as the person to go to with a difficult question. His supervisors commend him for his attention to detail, whether it is in dealing with a routine task or a major project. This dedication has made him a role model to his colleagues and inspired the confidence of all members of the University community who have dealt with him.

In addition to his regular duties, Kilts serves as an adviser to Five-Quad, the University's student-run volunteer ambulance service. Each year, he also volunteers his time to conduct CPR certification and first-aid classes for University employees, which are two of the most popular courses offered by the Employee Assistance Program. He is a shop steward for the public safety officers, who applaud him for his ability to informally resolve matters before grievances are filed.

Kilts took on two projects for which he was especially complimented. One of his personal and professional concerns is the prevention of alcohol abuse and as such he has worked tirelessly to organize a mock DWI fatal car crash for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. This involved coordinating services with Five-Quad, the University Public Safety Department, Albany Fire Department, Albany Med Flight, Empire Ambulance, and the Albany County Coroner, among others. The event was well attended and provided valuable training for those involved as well as a learning experience for the audience.

The second project Kilts played a major role in was the development and maintenance of the Public Safety Department's web page. The initiative took almost two years to complete and the result is a model for Public Safety Departments throughout the SUNY system.
