The Revolutionary Roots of Modern Yiddish, 1903-1917 (2008)
by Barry Trachtenberg

Associate Professor of Judaic studies Barry Trachtenberg's The Revolutionary Roots of Modern Yiddish, 1903-1917,  examines the impact of the 1905 Russian Revolution on the formation of Yiddish scholarship. At one time viewed as a corrupt form of German that Jews had to abandon, by 1917 Yiddish had become the dominant language of the Russian Jewish press.

Trachtenberg's book reveals how this change in status occurred and discusses the three major figures responsible for its transformation.
