EPSY440 - Evaluation

Attendance Policy Update

1. If a student leaves class early, there must be a legitimate reason, and that student must notify the instructor before class. The student will only receive half credit for that class (2.5 points). If an in-class assignment is conducted, that student will be required to complete an equivalent assignment for partial credit (7 points versus usual 10).

2. The only way students can get credit for a missed class when they notify the instructor after the fact is if they had a legitimate reason. Partial credit will be assigned at the instructor's discretion based on the validity of the excuse. In all cases, the student should notify the instructor as soon as possible as to the reason for the absence.

3. If the absence is planned, the student should notify the instructor at least one week in advance. If this is not possible, then the student should notify the instructor at his/her earliest convenience. The student will get full credit with the one week notice and a legitimate reason, as long as the student is not frequently absent (i.e., more than twice). In cases where notification is less than a week, credit will be full or partial at the instructor's discretion, but again, only for legitimate reasons.

4. Legitimate reasons (subject to the instructor's discretion) include illness (self or family if a parent), death, car accident, court, or personal reasons. A student may miss class for any other reason if he or she is not concerned about losing credit or doing well on the tests and assignments. Everyone will be granted one absence waiver…that is, one unexplained, undocumented absence.

5. Wherever possible, students will be required to show proof of absences (beyond the one absence waiver). In cases where this is not possible, it will be at the instructor's discretion to award full or partial credit. Again, this applies only to students who are not frequently absent. Those not showing proof will not be awarded any credit for the missed class. In-class assignments can be made up for full credit if a legitimate proof of absence is provided. If no proof of absence can be provided, in-class assignments can only be made up for partial credit (7 points max).

6. It appears to be fair to most students in this class that a student who is absent can receive full credit if he or she has a legitimate reason for the absence. This stands only for those students who do not have more than 2 absences. Any more than 2 absences, and the student will not receive credit (again, at the discretion of the instructor if the reason is legitimate).

The above policy changes are based on the fact that nearly all students believed those who are absent cannot be assessed to the same degree of validity as those who attend weekly.
