2. Students are free to back-place themselves 1 semester at their own discretion (e.g., a student has 3 years of high school Spanish, but would rather take 103 than 104). This is not the norm, but it is not uncommon. Students may also place themselves forward 1 semester at their own discretion.

3. Students may back-place 2 semesters (e.g., a student has 3 years of high school Spanish, but would like to take 102 rather than 104), but it must be justified by either consistently low grades in Spanish or not having had Spanish at least 3 years prior. Students who wish to place themselves forward 2 semesters also should justify it in terms of high Spanish grades and having lived a while in a Spanish-speaking country or setting.

4. Placement of students who come from backgrounds where any Spanish is spoken at home should consider either 105 or 205 (introductory and intermediate courses for "bilinguals") as their natural placement. For students where Spanish is usually or always spoken at home between family members and students have formally studied the language, 205 is more appropriate. For students where Spanish is only occasionally used at home and who have limited or no study of the formal aspects of the language, 105 is more appropriate.

5. Students wishing to deviate from the above parameters must gain written permission from the department head or language coordinator before enrolling in the class. Also, any individual student who is unsure of which class might be most appropriate for him/her is encouraged to talk to one of the aforementioned people.
