Worksheet: Subscribing to Listservs for your Graduate Program at
the University at Albany
Prerequisites for this Worksheet:
This worksheet assumes that you have completed the Worksheet on E-mail
at the University at Albany.
Assignment:
- Subscribe to the listserv that regularly disseminates news about your
graduate program here at the Rockefeller College. You will probably choose
between the lists
SISP-L@LISTSERV.ALBANY.EDU (for MLS and MSIS students),
MPA@LISTSERV.ALBANY.EDU (for MPA students), or
MPP@LISTSERV.ALBANY.EDU (for MPP students).
- Study carefully the protocols for replying to listservs. Make sure
that you clearly understand the distinction between replying to the entire
listserv and replying only to the person who posted a specific message on
the listserv.
- Once you successfully subscribe to the listserv of your choice, you
will receive a message in your e-mail notifying you of your success (you
may have to wait a bit). This message will also tell you how to unsubscribe.
Forward a copy of this message to the Course TA at the assigned e-mail address
for the course. If you have already subscribed to the appropriate listserv,
simply forward to the TA the first message that you receive from the listserv.
Discussion:
As an integral part of your graduate education here at the Rockefeller College,
you should sign up to the listserv that provides information to your graduate
program and check your e-mail at least once per week to keep abreast of what
is happening in your program. You may subscribe to many lists on this campus
(if you have time to read all the mail that you will get) as well as lists
maintained elsewhere. Messages requesting to subscribe or to unsubscribe
to lists at the University at Albany should be sent to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ALBANY.EDU.
The body of the message should indicate that you wish to subscribe, the name
of the list to which you wish to subscribe, and your name (to be added to
the list). Hence, if Deborah Andersen wanted to subscribe to the SISP-L listserv,
she would send a message with three parts as shown below:
subscribe SISP-L Deborah Andersen
