Worksheet: Email at the University at Albany

Prerequisites for this Worksheet:
This worksheet assumes that you have completed the Worksheet on Connecting to the University System

Assignment:
  1. Decide what mailer you plan to use during your graduate program at the Rockefeller College. Quite a few options exist - you may continue to use an email address that you already have, you could sign up through a separate Internet Service Provider (ISP) or you could use the Webmail systems supported by the UNIX cluster at the University. (You can access these services through an ISP connection.) If you are unsure what to decide, we suggest using the Webmail system with a UNIX account. To establish your UNIX account, see the directions found in the worksheet Connecting to the University at Albany’s Network.

  2. Compose an email message to the Course TA informing the TA of how you plan to send and receive emails. This message should be sent from your email address of choice. If you have not already done so, include in this message information on how you plan to connect to the University at Albany (see previous worksheet).
Discussion:
What mailer you use is closely linked to how you plan to access the Network at the University at Albany. The “default” option that is simplest and we will describe in some detail in this sheet is that you connect to the network through a computer in Draper 15 or Draper 23 and that you use the Webmail service. If this is the option that you choose, then simply visit the Webmail site at https://webmail.albany.edu/ . You should then login with your username and password, as described earlier in the worksheet on MyUAlbany and UAlbany e-mail accounts. Your username is your NetID; your password is the one you created for the UNIX e-mail account (which may be different than the password you created for MyUAlbany). For more information on how to use Webmail visit the ‘Documentation’ section of the Academic Computing web site and find the document(s) on Webmail.

If you choose to use an email address that is already active for you make sure that it is a true Internet email address as opposed to a local email or intranet account as used by some government offices of agencies.

Students who sign up for a university account on the UNIX cluster may use it with their POP mailers (e.g. MS Outlook, Pegasus Mail, Eudora, etc.) at the University or from home.
