Objective

This course will help you to develop an understanding of fundamental concepts in cartographic theory and practice. It will also introduce you to computer-assisted design (CAD) technologies.

Slocum, et. al., Thematic Cartography and Geovisualization, 3rd ed. Prentice-Hall.

Note: The text will be available at the Book House at Stuyvesant Plaza.

Supplies:

If you don’t have one already, you must purchase a USB 2.0-compatible flash drive (sometimes referred to as a jump drive or thumb drive) with at least 256 mBytes of memory. If you already have one, make sure it has a lot of free space on it. You can find these in almost any electronics store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc.) and online. Most computers less than 5-years old support USB 2.0 flash drives. For general use, you might want to buy a 1 or 2 gigabyte drive—it’s probably a better value in the long run. If you find a good price, please share the information! I just saw 4 GB drives at Best Buy for $19.95—many more at better prices are online.

All lab exercises must be completed independently. No group projects will be assigned. Lab assignments must be completed by the assigned deadline on the course schedule web page.
