Objective

This course will help you to develop an understanding of fundamental concepts in cartographic theory and practice. It will also introduce you to computer-assisted design (CAD) technologies.

Slocum, et. al., Thematic Cartography and Geographic Visualization, 2nd ed. Prentice-Hall. ISBN 0-13-035123-7.

Note: The text will be available at the Book House at Stuyvesant Plaza.

Supplies:

If you don’t have one already, you must purchase a USB 2.0-compatible flash drive (sometimes referred to as a jump drive or thumb drive) with at least 256 mBytes of memory. If you already have one, make sure it has a lot of free space on it. You can find these in almost any electronics store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc.) and online. Here is a link to a bunch of examples. Most computers less than 5-years old support USB 2.0 flash drives. For general use, you might want to buy a 1 or 2 gigabyte drive—it’s probably a better value in the long run. If you find a good price, please share the information!

Midterm exam 20%
Final exam 40%
Lab exercises 40%

All lab exercises must be completed independently. No group projects will be assigned. Lab assignments must be completed by the assigned deadline on the course schedule web page.
