Team presentations:
Each team will make 2 presentations on a topic assigned by the instructor. You should spend about 30-45 minutes on the topic, demonstrating a certain skill within the appropriate application. In addition, you should hand out instruction sheets and make these instructions available online. You should come up with 2-3 mini projects utilizing your team's skill for the class to add to their homepage. Finally, you will assist the instructor in guiding the class that night as we all work on that skill. Teams will be formed the first night of class.
Portfolio assignment:
Throughout the semester, we will spend a significant portion of class time working on mini assignments and the tools and techniques used for developing a successful web site. You will need to link the files that you have been working on in class from a student homepage you create. Of course, the first step in this assignment is creating your student homepage.
You will create a portfolio of work you created in class from demonstrations, team presentations, and on your own. You must include at least:
- 8 web pages linked together in a reasonable and useable way
- A consistent look and feel throughout the site
- A home page
- Email link
- A form with at least 6 elements. This form should work.
- Site map (textual or graphical)
- Graphics on every page, consistent with the look and feel of the site itself
- Imagemap
- Rollover buttons
- Banners
- Appropriate use of tables, layers, and/or CSS
- 3 Flash original animations (Flash buttons do not count)
- Link to your team page
- 2 things we did NOT cover in class but that you researched and learned on your own.
Please note that this is an opportunity to "show off" what you've learned in class and on your own.
Human Computer Interaction paper:
Write a 3 page paper about HCI and children. You can use the following resources as starting points, but you should do additional research:
The Role of Usability Research in Designing Children's Computer Products
Website Usability for Children, Jakob Nielsen
- What is Interaction Design and What Does it Mean for Information Designers?
This paper is an individual paper. In your paper, you should consider:
- What in HCI/interaction design?
- What are some of the things kids like/dislike in a web site?
- How are/could children be involved in designing web sites?
In addition, please include:
- title page with your name, team name, title of your paper and date
- 3 page body of paper with research cited appropriately. Use page numbers and headers for easy reading.
- bibliography with at least 5 cites
- This paper is worth 9 points
Final project
You will create the content, design, and graphics for a website on a topic of your choice. Please clear this concept with me by March 1 at the latest.
This site will be self-contained site on a topic of your choosing. It should have at least 5 pages with a consistent look and feel that supports the subject matter on the site. You should use extensive graphics, buttons, drop down menus or lists where appropriate, 1 working form, animations where appropriate, and your contact information somewhere on the site. Please note that if this site is for a real organization or business off-campus, you must take it off the UA server at the end of the semester.
You will need to do a 5 minute presentation of your final project on May 3.
Participation = 5 points
H omework, quizzes = 9 points
HCI paper = 9 points
Team presentation = 15 points
Team web site = 12 points
Portfolio website and presentation = 25 points
Final project and presentation = 25 pointsPoints will be deducted for unexcused absences, lateness, and early departures.
