Team Presentation:
Each week, one or two teams will lead the class discussion. I will lead the first discussion. This means that your team will:
- research the particular topic in advance
- write a memo to the class 1 week before your presentation about your topic that will include:
- the background issues/points regarding your topic
- any readings that should be done prior to your presentation
- discussion questions to follow your presentation
- Your team will then lead a 30-45 minute presentation on your topic and 45-60 minute class discussion
You will be graded on your presenation skills, your PowerPoint notes, the memo your team produces and your discussion participation (see below).
Draft and Final Paper Assignment/Peer Review Assignment:
You will select a topic relating to information science and do in-depth research on it. It may or may not be a topic we covered in class, but if we did cover it, you must examine a different angle or look more in-depth than we did in class. The final paper must be no less than 10 pages and no more than 12 pages, with standard formatting. You will present your research to the class at the end of the semester (specific dates to be determined). You will need to turn in a draft of your paper by April 13. That week, one of your classmates will peer review your paper (and you will review someone else's paper) and turn it back to you on April 20. The final paper and your draft with the peer review comments are due on May 4.
1 Page Reaction Papers :
You must write three 1page reaction papers over the semester. You can determine when you write them and what they are a reaction to. For instance, you can write a book review of a book you read for class on one of the topics, a web site review for one of the web sites you researched, or a reaction to one of the presentations/discussions. You can not use your own presentation or topic to react to. Career books and discussions also do not qualify.
Participation in class discussions and debates = 20 points
1 page reaction papers to presentations, books, websites = (3 * 5) = 15
Resume (5), cover letter (5) and interview class participation (5) and products = 15 points
Team presentation (oral presentation = 20, PowerPoint notes = 2.5 and memo = 2.5) = 25 points
Peer review comments = 5 points
Final paper (15) & presentation (5) = 20 points
Points will be deducted for unexcused absences, lateness, and early departures.
If you come across additional useful websites, please email me the link and I will add to this list throughout the semester.
