What is PAR?

Participatory action research can be defined as an effort to improve social arrangements and relations by actively changing them.  Contrasted to a model of research which seeks to simply report ‘what is,’ PAR is a collaboration between the researcher and the researched, the goal of which is to share knoweldges and create actual change within social systems and small groups.

In the context of feminist research, PAR implies an activist orientation to exposing and combating problems in the lives of women and other underserved groups.  The fact that both PAR and feminisms share a commitment to active, experiential knowledge means that there is a strong basis for connection between the two.
