Mission Statement

Other(ed) Voices: Who's Listening? emerged from a series of readings and conversations in the course, Postcolonial Feminist Theory in a Transnational Age, which explored the issue of power relations as shaped by colonialism, nationalism, ethnocentrism, racism, sexism, and classism. Utilizing feminist theory to address such postcolonial phenomena as cultural hybridity and fusion, multiculturalism, and globalization, student papers question the role of marginalized subjects and how their voices are often “othered” and, thus, rendered silent. They seek to break this silence by provocatively calling for new ways that listeners can “hear” these distant voices.
