6) Kneeling archer, Terra cotta. Tomb of First Emperor of the Ch'in Dynasty. 210 BC. This is an example of the many thousands of terra-cotta soldiers excavated from the surroundings of this emperor s tomb in the early 1970s. Note the intense realism of the sculpture, how each detail is carefully portrayed. Such realism is often characteristic of highly structured, authoritarian societies, like Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia. It would not appear again in China until the social realism of the communist era in the twentieth century.
