53) Guiseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) Hanging scroll; ink and light colors on silk; dated 1736. Castiglione was a Jesuit missionary who worked as a painter at the court of the Manchu Emperor Ch ien-lung. This large and fascinating work shows him painting in the accepted early-Ch ing orthodox manner combined with such Western techniques as perception and a realistic rendering of light and shadow.
