|39) Wu Chen (1280-1354) -- Bamboo. Album leaf, ink on paper, dated 1350. Wu Chen, the most reclusive of the four masters, was a consummate painter of bamboo. This slide shows one of twenty some album leaves that illustrate a manual of bamboo painting that Wit prepared for the instruction of his son. The entire album depicts all stages in the life of the bamboo and shows the plant in various guises throughout the four seasons of the year. The entire album is a tour-de-force study in the use of ink value and in the interrelationship of bamboo painting and
calligraphy - Wu's bamboo studies are clearly related to the earlier bamboo painting by Wen 13 T'ung (slide No. 22) and Chao Meng-fu.
