1) Jar. Painted pottery with black and white slip. Excavated in Shantung province in eastern China. Lung-shan culture. Late Neolithic period, about 3,000 BC. This jar is charactenstic of early Chinese sensitivity toward the union of form and design. Notice how the swirling pattern around at the top and the straight, triangular patterns around the middle are both integrated with each other and with the overall shape of the vessel. Such integration will be carried forward into the construction and design of later bronze vessels.
