LAB 6
GOG 385: Comparison of Land Use
Classification Systems
(revised
06/01)
PURPOSE:
To compare the utility of two different land use/land cover
classification systems by classifying imagery and constructing maps using both
systems.
MATERIALS:
1)
LUNR and USGS Classification Manuals
2) Herculine
3) Drafting Pencil and Tape
4) Magnifier
METHOD:
Your assignment is to read and understand the LUNR and USGS
classification documents provided in the IMC, and perform a level II
classification (or its close approximation) on an image with each
classification system. The image you
will use for this assignment is a high-altitude color infra-red (CIR)
transparency which may be selected from the list of available imagery
below. SELECT ONE IMAGE to use for both
classifications and mapping.
Performing the
classification will involve identifying and delineating areal land cover on two
separate overlays (1 for USGS system and 1 for the LUNR system), and labeling
each polygon or raster element with the correct code. After you are done with the overlays write a 2-page description
of the two systems comparing their strengths and weaknesses.
You
do not have to do the entire image. You
will be given instructions in class regarding which quarter of the image you
may select to map.
