1. To investigate thoroughly the work of a contemporary digital media artist and to produce a work which demonstrates a similar strategy, medium, sensibility, or aesthetic.
2. To practice writing a proposal for a self-directed work, as well as an artist's statement.
3. To view or otherwse discover venues for viewing digital media installations by contemporary artists.
4. To investigate collaboration as a mode of artistic production.
Guidelines:
1. To begin, you will be required to make at least one trip
to NYC between October 1 and 22. I will provide you with a list of exhibitions
to check out via our class listserv. You will also be expected to read the
essays to which I've linked in the syllabus. I will show the work of many artists
relevant to this project in class--don't miss these Tuesday lectures. You may
also want to check out the web
resources page for additional links to artists. galleries, etc.
2. Choose an artist for whose work you have developed an appreciation or to whom you otherwise feel an affinity. An interesting alternative would be to produce a thoughtful parody or satire of an artist's work to which you respond negatively. Investigate thoroughly their work, identify the salient aesthetic and theoretical traits, and write critique (a minimum of four paragraphs typed in 12-point font in black ink on white paper) about a single piece.
3. After receiving feedback from me and the other members of the class, produce a work that is an homage to or quote of the artist's work. Try to get beyond producing something that merely "looks like" the artist's work to a piece that incorporates what you feel to be their methodology or aesthetic sensibility. This is no small task, so I am giving you plenty of time to develop a response.
4. This project will require you to make many decisions as to the most appropriate media and presentation. Once you have decided what you will produce, write another 4 paragraphs (also in 12-point font in black ink on white paper)--this time proposing the project formally. Explain precisely why you have chosen this artist to "collaborate with". What form will it take? What media/materials will be involved? Who is your intended audience? Where and how would the audience encounter the work? What do you hope to accomplish by producing this work? How long will it take? How much will it cost? How long will it last?
5. Submit the work in the appropriate finished form, including one copy on either CD or DVD which will not be returned. The disk should be clearly labeled with your name and the title of the work and should include your project files as well as your artist's statement. If the work is to be output as prints, I will accept labeled slides in lieu of a disk for documentation.
Critique:
The crit of
your
finished project will take place Tuesday, November 7 .
