Chapter 10: EMOTION
Chapter Overview
Chapter 10 provides a comprehensive summary of the field of emotion. The first section defines two aspects of emotion: responses and feelings. The central nucleus of the amygdala is described as integrating emotional responses. Phineas Gage is described as an exemplar of the effects of damage to the orbitofrontal cortex. The history and problems of the prefrontal lobotomy procedure conclude the section. The next section describes the function of facial expressions in communicating emotion and neural systems involved in recognizing emotion communications. Section three covers the James-Lange theory of emotional feelings. Cannon’s objections are portrayed as ineffective and the section describes research supportive of the James-Lange theory. The final section of the chapter covers the topic of aggression including neural and hormonal controls.
