New Business Building
May 2013
This project involves the construction of a new University academic building which will provide approximately 96,000 square feet of additional state-of-the-art learning and teaching environment space on the Uptown Campus. The building will be the new home for the University’s top ranked School of Business and will include over 40 new instructional and study spaces to serve the University’s larger classroom space needs.
The New Business Building is being constructed adjacent to the Entry Plaza and Collins Circle, directly across from the University Hall, and is the final component of the ceremonial ‘front door’ to the campus.
The building draws much of its design inspiration from the existing Edward Durell Stone Podium complex and quadrangle residence halls that dominate much of the Uptown Campus. The formality of the orthogonal aesthetics of the Durell Stone buildings is respected and preserved in the new building, but in a more modern interpretation.
The massing of the New Business School building will remain as a simple rectangular volume, so as not to compete with the Podium. The building interior is designed for maximum circulation and natural lighting. The exterior of the building includes both solid and transparent volumes with a dramatic glassed area on the northeast corner, revealing dynamic and engaging interior spaces that will help activate Collins Circle and the Entry Plaza during the day and at night.
The University has designed this building to achieve LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council, a measure of sustainability and green features of building design, construction, and operations. Included in the building will be maximization of daylight (to reduce lighting needs) with specially designed precast panels, clerestory skylights, and automatic daylight responsive lighting controls as well as triple glazed insulated glass, and a low velocity ventilation system. The building will include a real-time building efficiency information center in the lobby.
