News and Communications

The News and Communications Office within the University’s Communications & Marketing unit oversees three areas: public relations, media relations and social media. Each may play its own role in marketing your event.

Public Relations

The News and Communications Office manages the University’s public relations efforts including the dissemination of information between the University and the public. The office shapes University messages with the ultimate goal of raising awareness about the University’s people and programs.

The University’s public relations staff can assist with:

  • Coordinating news conferences.
  • Creating photo opportunities.
  • Highlighting synergies among schools and programs.
  • Support media relations and social media efforts.

Media Relations

The News and Communications Office also oversees all media relations on behalf of the University. The team works with a variety of news outlets to encourage the promotion of University events and news. The team proactively pitches targeted media and also handles reactive responses to reporter queries.

UAlbany’s media relations staff can assist with:

  • Providing members of the media with news and information about the work of faculty, students, and staff.
  • Answering media inquiries about the University and its programs.
  • Developing homepage news stories, news releases and advisories.
  • Pitching stories to targeted media for maximum exposure.

Another important outlet for event promotion is through online community calendars hosted by TV, radio and print outlets. These outlets allow you to upload your event information to their online calendar which is filtered by topic and searched by the community-at-large.  The service is free but you are required to set up an account to input information.

Social Media

People join social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to connect, interact, and share with peers. Given their similar natures, it makes perfect sense to use social media to help plan, promote, and build awareness of public events as well.
