The University’s Writing Center announced that it will be presenting a free film series entitled “Films Featuring Writers and Writing.”

Participation is encouraged for the 2004 HumaniTech* Conference, “Humanities, Technology, science, and the Nexus of Discourse,” to be held on campus April 23-25, as part of the Writing Semester. Submit proposals for papers and exhibits to Humanitech2004@yahoo.com. For more information or other queries, please contact the conference committee at the same email address.

The Undergraduate Program is asking all faculty in the English Department to nominate graduating seniors who have agreed they would like to be the speaker at the English Department Convocation at graduation. Before submitting a nomination form, please be sure that the student you are nominating is committed to attending graduation. There is no GPA restriction. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 1 to Rosemary Hennessy.

There has been a call for submissions for the 2004 Norton Scholar’s Prize. Individual faculty might nominate one of his or her students. Entries must be postmarked to the Norton Company no later than April 16. Details are listed on FYE.

The Graduate Program has announced that they are taking submissions for The Eugene Garber Prize for Short Fiction. Details are listed on FYE. For more information contact Annette Roberts by email delta@cas.albany.edu. Submit entries to Annette Roberts. Deadline is 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. Also, for departmental graduate students, submissions are now being taken for the fifth annual Michael Sprinker Graduate Writing Competition. Details are listed on FYE. Upcoming Meetings & Events

The next event for the Forum on the New Humanities will be held on Tuesday, March 30, in Humanities Building Room 354, 1:00 to 2:20 pm. Professor Lisa Thompson will discuss “The Cultural Politics of Representation: Visualizing Black Women’s Sexuality”. Her presentation is part of the “New Humanities” series which is organized in conjunction with the English Honors Seminar on literary and cultural studies. There will be an open discussion after the lecture. The lecture and discussion are open to the public.

Initiatives in Teaching is a series of afternoon conversations for English faculty and teaching assistants dealing with the topic of student work. The next meeting will be on Friday, April 23 from 3:00-5:00 in HU 290. All are welcome. All teaching faculty are invited.

Rachel Zitomer invites all to the Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Annual Poetry Slam on Saturday, March 27 at 7 pm in West Hall Auditorium, RPI. Shuttle service will be provided from Rensselaer Union 6:30-7:00 pm.

Faculty News
Congratulations to Jeffrey Gibson and Kate Winter recipients of the 2003-04 University at Albany Award for Excellence in Teaching. There will be a special award ceremony on Friday, April 16th, at 3 pm in the Campus Center Ballroom and during the General Faculty Meeting on Wednesday, April 28th at 3 pm in the Campus Center Ballroom.

We are pleased to announce that we have a date and location for Judith Fetterley’s retirement party. Please mark your calendars for Friday, April 30 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Alumni House. More details will follow.
