Program Concentrations

The Concentrations:
A Brief Overview

The graduate program’s concentration system aims to move beyond strict chronological periodizations and set divisions among literature, rhetoric, composition, theory, and creative writing.  Our students participate in focused, yet flexible, fields of study that bring together people working in a broad array of genres, periods, theoretical perspectives, and disciplinary areas.

Doctoral students take four courses in a particular concentration and at least two courses in other concentration areas.  (Individual courses often cover more than one concentration area.)  Master’s students have no course requirements for concentrations.  Students in both degree programs can readily formulate expertise in two distinct concentrations.
