Guidelines for Ph.D. Students Navigating the Academic Job Market
Doctoral students in English at the University at Albany have successfully found positions in a variety of types of institutions: research universities, community colleges, and liberal the arts colleges. Others have found positions in the fields of higher education administration, the arts, and technology. Looking for an academic appointment can be a prolonged, exhausting process, but with the right preparation you can maximize your chances for finding the position that is a good match for you. The resources collected in this website are meant to help you navigate this process. Use these resources to help get started, and then draw on your faculty advisors or mentors, as well as on the faculty members of the Professionalization Committee. They can help you tailor the advice presented here to your specific qualifications and goals.
In addition to consulting the materials on this website, you should request a packet of sample application materials from the Graduate Studies Office (HU 316). This packet contains the application materials prepared by several University at Albany English graduates who successfully landed academic positions in a variety of types of institutions.
