IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

Monitor Your Communication Options

  • If you completed the preselection form, school districts will be
contacting you directly for an interview time.
  • Make sure to monitor your e-mail and phone messages.
  • Tell your roommates you might receive an important call and they
         need to take careful notes.

PREPARING FOR THE EXPO

  • Plan for the School Districts in Attendance.
  • Read through the list of schools attending the event because this
list will continue to be updated.
  • Create and prioritize a list of school districts of interest to visit the
         day of the event.
  • Research those school districts and be ready to articulate why
         you're interested in them.
  • All alumni are invited to the event and have the opportunity to
         schedule interviews that day.

Make sure you arrive early! Parking is limited and becomes more difficult as the day progresses. If possible, we encourage you to use mass transit. The CDTA bus schedules and routes are available at http://www.cdta.org/ The #12 bus goes from UAlbany to the Empire State Plaza.

Prepare a 45-second Summary of Your Qualifications

  • Know yourself, i.e. education, experiences, personal traits,
         activities, career goals.
  • Know what kind of job you want and what you value in your work.
  • Develop an interesting verbal summary of your background,
achievements, and career interests and practice prior to the event.

What to Bring to the Education Expo

  • A portfolio, note pad, pen, and many copies of your updated
         resume.
  • Valid photo identification.
  • Money for lunch and parking.
  • Make sure to print out the directions to the Convention Center and
         leave extra time for parking.

Remember to

  • Wear conservative, professionally-tailored, well-pressed clothing
(preferably a suit) since first impression is critical.
  • Arrive at your designated time.
  • Have several well thought out questions for each school district.
  • Prepare for the unexpected such as parking problems and
         waiting in lines.

DURING THE EDUCATION EXPO

  • Register at the University at Albany table.
  • Greet the recruiter with a firm handshake and make sure you get
         their name and title.
  • Be ready to present a summary of your interests and
         qualifications.
  • Try to have one or two questions in mind for each employer.
  • Ask what happens next and what, if anything, you should do to
         advance your candidacy.
  • Drop off your selection/evaluation sheet to University at Albany
         table before you leave.

AFTER THE EDUCATION EXPO

  • Write thank you letters immediately following the event to each
recruiter that you made contact with.
  • Complete the application process with the schools of your
         interest.
  • Learn from the process by talking to others about your experience.
  • Continue your job search as this is just one of many
         opportunities.
